7 Ted Talks That Will Motivate the Shit Out of You

Finding motivation when your a blogger can be challenging. It can especially feel lonely if your friends, family members or significant others don’t really understand what you’re going through. The blogging community is an awesome one to be a part of.

But still, there are days when you just can’t find the motivation to do what needs to be done. The days are long when you’re blogging at night and working a day job by day. These Ted Talks will help you find the motivation to trudge through the hard times.

If you haven’t heard about Ted Talks in the past, I’ll give you the rundown. Ted is a nonprofit company that is devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful 18 minute or less talks. TED started in the 80’s as a conference for Technology, Entertainment, and Design converged.

1. How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over | Mel Robbins

“Anything that is a break from your routine is going to require force. If you think about your life, it’s kind of funny because we’re kids and then we become adults and we spend so much time trying to push our lives into a routine. And then we grow bored of it.”

2. The Power of Vulnerability | Brené Brown

“The things I can tell you about it: It’s universal; we all have it. The only people who don’t experience shame have no capacity for human empathy or connection. No one wants to talk about it, and the less you talk about it, the more you have it.”

3. Why We have too Few Woman Leaders | Sheryl Sandberg

So for any of us in this room today, let’s start out by admitting we’re lucky. We don’t live in the world our mothers lived in, our grandmothers lived in, where career choices for women were so limited. And if you’re in this room today, most of us grew up in a world where we have basic civil rights, and amazingly, we still live in a world where some women don’t have them.”

4. Success, Failure, and the drive to keep Creating | Elizabeth Gilbert

But the weird thing is that 20 years later, during the crazy ride of “Eat, Pray, Love,” I found myself identifying all over again with that unpublished young diner waitress who I used to be, thinking about her constantly, and feeling like I was her again, which made no rational sense whatsoever because our lives could not have been more different. She had failed constantly. I had succeeded beyond my wildest expectation. We had nothing in common. Why did I suddenly feel like I was her all over again?”

5. Listening to Shame | Brené Brown

And my life did end when that happened. And maybe the hardest part about my life ending is that I learned something hard about myself, and that was that, as much as I would be frustrated about not being able to get my work out to the world, there was a part of me that was working very hard to engineer staying small, staying right under the radar. But I want to talk about what I’ve learned.”

6. I got 99 problems…palsy is just one | Maysoon Zayid

And I don’t want anyone in this room to feel bad for me, because at some point in your life, you have dreamt of being disabled. Come on a journey with me. It’s Christmas Eve, you’re at the mall, you’re driving around in circles looking for parking, and what do you see? Sixteen empty handicapped spaces.”

7.  The Power of Introverts | Susan Cain

When I was nine years old, I went off to summer camp for the first time. And my mother packed me a suitcase full of books, which to me seemed like a perfectly natural thing to do. Because in my family, reading was the primary group activity. And this might sound antisocial to you, but for us it was really just a different way of being social.”

Bonus: Why Your Critics Aren’t the Ones Who Count | Brené Brown

“Everything I know about vulnerability: it is not about winning or losing, it’s about showing up and being seen. This is who I want to be I want to create. I want to make a thing that didn’t exist before touching them. One guarantee: you will get your ass kicked. If you’re not in the arena also getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your opinion”

We all need a little push sometimes

This last video wasn’t a Ted Talk but as you can probably tell, I love Brené Brown. I’m reading my way through her books right now. This talk is directed towards creatives and as bloggers, that’s what we do. We create.

So use these videos to light that fire under your ass that you may need. Use that fire to your advantage to get stuff done. Until next time.
